News Broadcasters as a practice rely on self-generated content; but in the modern networked environment News broadcasters having to use video footage that is generally available in public platforms In order to appropriately portray the current events and trends, requires attention. The key overlaps are with regard to Sports and Entertainment. While the usage of Live Sports footage has been streamlined with a process agreed with the Sports broadcasters; usage of Entertainment content remains a grey area for News Broadcasters.
NBF is working with the relevant authorities to ensure that The Copyrights Act provides a clear cut exemption for fair use of Copyright material referred by the act for pure “in news“usage like the review of movies/ shows and for news discussions concerning in news topics like Major awards won, obituaries or a personality is part of a current affairs discussions.
